Founded in 1991 by people interested in learning in retirement, ElderCollege is a completely member-directed organization sponsored by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, offering short-term educational experiences for adults in Reno and Northern Nevada. It seeks to foster intellectual stimulation, new interests and personal development through academic pursuits. ElderCollege provides a community in which to gather, get acquainted and socialize in relaxed settings, and welcomes any adult who subscribes to the spirit and purposes of ElderCollege.
ElderCollege is part of the "Learning in Retirement" network around the country serving groups of self-motivated learners who are eager to expand their own educational experiences. ElderCollege endorses this concept and enables both its members and the university to commit to lifelong academic growth, exploration and understanding.
ElderCollege members are active learners involved in all aspects of decision-making, including curriculum planning, selection of instructors and administration of the organization. Members are not only encouraged to attend courses, but to design and lead them as well. Yet ElderCollege provides more than classes and social activities it links its members to a community beyond the classroom and offers a new world of opportunities!
ElderCollege members who have experience and expertise in a wide range of pursuits teach many of our activities and classes. ElderCollege instructors are also drawn from the University of Nevada, Reno faculty and from the community at large.
Most classes, activities and events are held at the Warren Nelson Building, second floor, 401 West Second St., Reno, the universitys off-campus ElderCollege facility.
